- How to install the hardware monitoring agent
What you are going to learn:
The Hardware Appliance is a simple plug-and-play solution to deploy the Obkio Agent almost anywhere. Two cables must be connected to the hardware appliance and the physical installation is completed: Power and Ethernet. The Ethernet cable must have DHCP enabled and no VLANs should be configured on the network port.
In the Obkio App, go to the Agents page and then click the + button at the top right then
Create new agent. The first step is to select the hardware agent type. Then, you can enter the settings for the agent. Learn more on each setting at Agent Settings. Next step is to associate the hardware appliance with the created agent.
Once the agent is created, the next step is to associate the hardware appliance with the Agent. There is a Serial Number printed on the hardware appliance. The serial number is used to connect the hardware appliance with the agent created in the App.
During the agent creation process, the last window is a form asking for that serial number. You can add it at that point or skip that step and do it later on.
After the creation process, you can associate the hardware appliance by clicking the three dots menu icon at the top right of the agent page and then select
Associate Hardware Agent.
To dissociate the hardware appliance from an agent, simply click the three dots menu icon at the top right of the agent page and then select
Dissociate Hardware Agent.
To move a hardware appliance from one agent to another one, just Dissociate from the first and then Associate with the new agent.
By default, the Hardware Appliance DNS configuration is using the DNS servers distributed by the DHCP server plus
18.104.22.168. To remove
22.214.171.124 from the configuration or to hardcode DNS servers (which we do not recommend), contact our support team and they will modify the appliance configuration.
By default, the following NTP servers are used:
A valid NTP configuration is mandatory to make sure the time on the device is accurate. If it is not, the SSL/TLS certificates will not be valid and communication with the Obkio Cloud will not be possible.
To change the NTP servers, contact our support team and they will modify the appliance configuration. Note that it's not possible right now to use the NTP servers distributed by DHCP.
It is not possible for you to configure a static IP on the hardware appliances, but the Obkio Support Team can do it remotely. However, there is no reset or rollback feature. If the IP address is incorrect, there is no easy way to set it back to DHCP. This is why we recommend to reserve and fix the IP address in the DHCP server configuration instead of configuring a static IP on the hardware appliance itself. Quick tip: the serial number is the MAC address of the first Ethernet port on the device, in case you would like to reserve the IP before the installation.
As for all other agent types, some firewall configurations might be required if outbound connections are filtered. Refer to the article Firewall Configurations for more details.
