IP Monitoring That Goes Beyond Ping

"It's Down" Isn't Enough. You Need to Know WHERE and WHY.

Your payment gateway goes offline. Customers can't checkout. Your monitoring tool alerts: "Endpoint Unreachable." Now what?

You contact your vendor. They say everything's fine on their end. Your ISP says the same. Hours pass while you manually run traceroutes, check different segments, and try to pinpoint where the failure actually occurred.

Traditional IP monitoring tells you THAT something broke. It doesn't tell you WHERE.

Obkio's IP Monitoring is different. When an endpoint goes down, you see the complete network path and exactly which hop failed instantly.

Instead of "unreachable," you can see packet loss on the ISP edge router, starting at 2:03 PM. You escalate to the right team with proof in hand. You can correlate IP monitoring with NPM sessions, SNMP metrics, and application performance data, all on one app.

That's the difference between knowing something is broken and knowing how to fix it.

You Need IP Monitoring That Goes Beyond "Up" or "Down"

IP Monitoring with Obkio Network Destinations goes beyond basic ping checks. It provides continuous reachability monitoring combined with full traceroute diagnostics for any IP address.

When an IP becomes unreachable, you don't just get an alert—you get the complete network path showing exactly where connectivity broke.

  • Hop-by-hop visibility showing which router, switch, or network segment is failing
  • Automatic traceroutes that run continuously, not just when you remember to check
  • Historical path data revealing if this is a new issue or a recurring pattern
  • Multi-location monitoring showing whether problems are isolated or widespread
  • Correlation with network performance, SNMP device and application performance data

Step 4: Create Dashboards to Analyze IPs

When an IP becomes unreachable, you can use ICMP (via Network Destinations) to test your IPs. Since your Obkio agents already monitor gateway and ISP performance through NPM sessions, you can then correlate your ICMP data with NPM and SNMP data on your dashboard.

Step 4: Create Dashboards to Correlate IP Performance with Your Network Data

At this point, you can now dive-deeper to understand the source of IPs that are down or underperforming. Create a dashboard and add Traceroute and Network Map widgets for your Network Destinations.

  • In the Dashboards tab, click "Add Widget"
  • Select the Network Destinations Metrics from the list
  • Select the Agent performing the test and the Destination Test
  • The select the graph type, Traceroutes, Network Maps, or both
  • The graphs will then be added to your dashboard

Obkio IP Monitoring vs. Ping Monitoring

Unlike standalone IP monitoring tools, IP Monitoring with Obkio integrates with your complete Obkio monitoring stack

Traditional ping monitoring tells you THAT something is down. It doesn't tell you WHY or WHERE the problem is.

  • When a critical endpoint becomes unreachable, you're left with questions:
  • Is the device actually down?
  • Is it a network issue between you and the endpoint?
  • Which hop in the path is failing?
  • Is it your network, your ISP, or the destination's infrastructure?

Correlation with Network Performance

When an IP becomes unreachable, compare the traceroute data with your gateway and ISP monitoring sessions. Instantly see whether issues are within your network, at your internet edge, or beyond your control.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between IP Monitoring and agent-to-agent sessions? Icon Grey Arrow Up Icon Grey Arrow Down

Agent-to-agent sessions provide bidirectional synthetic monitoring with deeper performance metrics. IP Monitoring is for endpoints where you can't install a destination agent—it gives you reachability and path visibility via ICMP.

Can I monitor IPs outside my network? Icon Grey Arrow Up Icon Grey Arrow Down

Yes. You can monitor any IP address that's reachable from your Obkio agents, including third-party services, cloud endpoints, and partner networks.

How often does IP monitoring run? Icon Grey Arrow Up Icon Grey Arrow Down

IP monitoring runs continuously with ICMP probes every second. Traceroutes are performed constantly to maintain up-to-date path information.

Do I need firewall rules to monitor external IPs? Icon Grey Arrow Up Icon Grey Arrow Down

Your agents need outbound ICMP (ping) access to the destination IPs. No inbound firewall rules or configuration is needed at the destination.

What happens if the destination blocks ICMP? Icon Grey Arrow Up Icon Grey Arrow Down

If a destination blocks ICMP echo requests, IP monitoring won't work. However, most network infrastructure and many servers respond to ping for monitoring purposes.

How is this different from using PingPlotter or similar tools? Icon Grey Arrow Up Icon Grey Arrow Down

Unlike standalone tools, Obkio's IP Monitoring integrates with your full network stack (NPM, SNMP, APM) for automatic correlation. Data is stored in the cloud (6-36 months), accessible from anywhere, with no local storage limitations.
