Obkio Vision
Obkio Vision

Obkio Vision is Obkio's Visual Traceroutes tool which allows users to draw traceroutes from the selected Monitoring Agents to multiple destinations, and see the overall performance over each hop and every hop change over a period of time.

Obkio Vision is included in every plan. Get more information on Obkio licensing here.

How to access Obkio Vision
How to access Obkio Vision

Obkio Vision must be accessed from an Obkio Monitoring Agent. Once opened, all the traceroutes shown from Obkio Vision will come from that selected agent.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. From the Home page of Obkio's app, click Agents on the left-hand menu.
  2. Click on the agent from which the traceroutes will be shown.
  3. Click on the blue button titled Visual Traceroutes with Obkio Vision.

How does it work?
How does it work?

Obkio Vision's traceroutes come from an Obkio agent, which sends ICMP packets to each configured network destination every second, and then aggregates the results.

The data is then available for a maximum of 72 hours. This is because the results are stored locally on the agent where the storage capacity is limited. For this reason, users cannot access the data if the agent is offline.

There are three sections in Obkio Vision:

  1. The Quality Matrix
  2. The Network Map
  3. The Traceroutes

The Quality Matrix
The Quality Matrix

The Quality Matrix is used to build the visual traceroutes shown in the Network Map and to select the detailed traceroutes in the Traceroute section.

Here’s how you to use it.

Obkio Vision - How to use it

The example above shows:

  • How to change the time range selected by clicking on the arrows.
  • How to draw a Network Map by selecting the time range on the first row of the matrix, and the destinations (on the column next to the names).
  • How to select the Traceroutes of a specific destination for a period of time.
  • How to adjust the sensitivity of the Quality Score, where the default setting is Medium.
  • A number, circled in black next to the destination, which represents the number of route changes during the last 3 hours.

The Network Map
The Network Map

The Network Map shows each hop obtained in all the traceroutes. For more detailed information, hover your mouse over each hop.

All common hops on different destinations are grouped together. The color of the Quality Score is indicated on each hop, and the route changes are shown with multiple hops in the same column.

The traceroutes
The traceroutes

The selected traceroutes in the Quality Matrix will be displayed in this section with the Quality Score on each hop. Separated traceroutes will be shown with each route change in between.

Destinations
Destinations

In addition to the Obkio Agent's Monitoring Sessions, users can add traceroutes to Extra Destinations IPs (or Hostname). That is useful to track network performance and events on an external network.

Here’s how to do it:

  1. From the Obkio Vision window, click on the Destination button located on the top right. This will show all the current destinations configured.
  2. Click on the Add button.
  3. Enter a destination description and the IP or the hostname of the destination.

Note: Using a hostname instead of an IP can end up tracing multiple IP addresses, since the DNS resolution can return multiple IPs to a single hostname. Users can limit this behavior with the Number of IPs to resolve dropdown menu. By default, no limit is selected. DNS lookups are also executed every 2 minutes.

Note that the number of Extra Destination IPs is limited based on the subscription plan and the Obkio Vision License.
